The Icelandic Nurses' Association

New collective agreement signed

The Icelandic Nurses' Association has signed a collective agreement with the Icelandic state. The agreement was signed April 12th, 2023, and applies to all nurses working for the state.

This agreement is short term and is in effect from April 1st, 2023, to March 31st, 2024.

It guarantees wage improvement for nurses and involves changes in working hours, sick leave, etc.

The agreement will be presented to nurses in four separate meetings, one will be in English.


Thursday April 13th 12:00 – 13:00 via Teams

Thursday April 13th 17:00 – 18:00 via Teams

Friday April 14th 15:30 – 16:30 via Teams

Presentation in English, Monday April 17th 16:00 – 17:00 via Teams.

Voting on the agreement is electronic and is open on Mínar síður from Saturday April 15th 12:00 to Monday April 24th 12:00. Only nurses with full membership in The Icelandic Nurses' Association can vote.


About us

The Icelandic Nurses' Association (Félag íslenskra hjúkrunarfræðinga) has approximately 4500 members of which 3600 are active. Membership is open to nurses with full nursing qualification and registered by the Icelandic Ministry of Health.

To become a member the form needs to be filled out and posted along with the registration from the Ministry of Health to the Icelandic Nurses' Association.


The Association is a professional and trade organization. Its purpose is to engage in the advancement of nursing and the professional development, terms of employment and working conditions of nurses by:

  • Promoting the development of nursing and the knowledge and competence of nurses.
  • Safeguarding the interests of nurses and defending their autonomy, rights, obligations, terms of employment and working conditions.
  • Upholding the Association’s code of ethics.
  •  Participating in the formulation of health service policies with a special emphasis on social responsibility and public interest.
